WEEK 1
25 February,2015

Introduction to Social and New Media

New Media

• Media - ‘communication media’ and the specialised and separate institutions and organisations in which people worked: print media and the press, photography, advertising, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), publishing, and so on.
• ‘new media’ - refers to a wide range of changes in media production, distribution and use (technological, textual, conventional and cultural)
 • All media was “new media” at some point –Newspapers/magazines – Television – Radio – Internet

Time to reach 50 million users:
• RADIO - 38 Years
• TELEVISION - 13 Years
• INTERNET - 4 Years
• FACEBOOK - 9 MONTHS

• (1) The forms of communicating in the digital world. It implies that the user obtains the material via desktop and laptop computers, smartphones or tablets.
(2) The concept that new methods of communicating in the digital world allow smaller groups of people to congregate online and share, sell and swap goods and information. It also allows more people to have a voice in their community and in the world in general.

Characteristics of new media
• To avoid confusion. The new media in the 21st century should be considered as
• Many to many instead of
• one to one (interpersonal)
• one to many (broadcast) possibilities to simultaneously deliver an infinite number of individualized messages while providing equal control over that content

Web 2.0
“Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the Internet as a platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.” - Tim O’Reilly

• provides all the services and applications to allow individuals to co-create content, collaborate and share it with others. Defined as the "read-write" web
• content created by "users", rather than specialist authors or publishers using a variety of affordable technologies like blogs, podcasts and wikis. Supports usergenerated content
• through the use of social media like blogs, wikis, social bookmarking tools and social networks. Encourages the social aspect of the Web

Web 2.0 Concepts
• Blogging • Forums • Wikis • Social Networks • Bookmarking • Folksonomy = Tagging • E-commerce • Syndication • Instant Messaging • Mashup • Collaborative Software

Blogging

Wiki
• Collectively share and edit a body of knowledge • Ongoing process of creation and collaboration • Knowledge Management • Wikipedia • Enterprise wikis

Social Networking
 • Online communities
• Share information
• Connect people with same interest
• Personal, Business, Political

• Mobile-enabled
• Extra features: file transfer, contact lists, conferences
• Business use to for more efficient communication

• Aggregated for you by a RSS feed reader
• Bloglines, GoogleReader

Mashup
• Aggregates data from more than one source
• Often using Open API to build services from data sources
• e.g. Real estate data on Google map

Collaborative Software
• Google Docs
• Vyew
• Real-time collaboration on documents
• Change the way we work

Web 2.0 vs Social Media
• Web 2.0 was first and social media has grown out of Web 2.0 and the creation of the usergenerated Web. You can refer to social media as a Web 2.0 innovation, but referring to Web 2.0 as social media is incorrect because it ignores all its less social aspects, such as blogs, YouTube, and so on.

Social Media
• Social media is - Use of web-based technologies allowing the creation and exchange of user-generated content. Blending of technology and social.
• Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people to create, share or exchange information, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks.

Social and New Media in Teaching and Learning
• Write and article on “current practices and impact of social and new media for teaching and learning” or “social and new media educational features and aspects for teaching and learning”
 • Refer to the journal and conference proceeding as your guideline.

*  Today we present our proposal for new media..
We choose to use Google Drive in our teaching and learning. Why we choose it???

Google Drive is a cloud storage service that allows you to store your documents, photos, videos, and more online. From Drive, you can also use Google Docs, Google Sheets, and other applications to create and edit various types of files.

Creating files on Google Drive

Google Drive doesn't just store your files; it also allows you to createshare, and manage documents with its own productivity apps. If you've ever used a suite like Microsoft Office, some things about Google Drive's apps might seem familiar. For instance, the types of files you can work with are similar to files that can be created with various Microsoft Office programs.
These are the types of files you can create and share on Google Drive:
  •  Documents: For composing letters, flyers, essays, and other text-based files (similar to Microsoft Word documents)
  •  Spreadsheets: For storing and organizing information (similar to Microsoft Excel workbooks)
  •  Presentations: For creating slideshows (similar to Microsoft PowerPoint presentations)
  •  Forms: For collecting and organizing data
  •  Drawings: For creating simple vector graphics or diagrams
